Ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves and a
computer to obtain images of various organs, vessels, and tissues within the body. Diagnostic
ultrasound in Albuquerque, Los Lunas, and Santa Fe is a safe and effective way to view internal
organs and assess blood flow without the injection of contrast or exposure to radiation.

Ultrasound can be used to examine different parts of the body, including the breast, thyroid,
abdomen, female pelvic area, prostate, scrotum, as well as arteries and veins. General
ultrasound in Albuquerque and other locations can also be used to detect various medical
conditions, such as heart problems (e.g. valves and muscle motion ), kidney or spleen issues,
and blood vessel problems (e.g., clots in the veins, enlargement or narrowing of arteries). During
an ultrasound, a warm gel is applied to the surface of the skin, acting as a conductor of sound
and preventing air from getting between the skin and the transducer. As the transducer is moved
over the skin, sound waves are sent through the skin, creating echoes that are picked up by the
transducer and converted into images by the computer.

Ultrasounds generally require minimal preparation, but there are a few specific cases that call
for additional measures, such as:

1. Abdominal ultrasounds – To obtain clearer images of the area being examined, it is
necessary to abstain from eating or drinking for 6-8 hours prior to the exam.
2. Pelvic, renal, or obstetrical ultrasounds – For these types of ultrasounds, you may
need to drink sufficient water to fill your bladder, which can help improve the clarity of the
scans.

If preparation is necessary, our office will contact you to discuss the necessary steps to
take before your appointment.

During your ultrasound in Albuquerque or any other location, one of our registered
radiologic technologists will position you on an examination table and apply warm gel to the
area being studied. The technologist will then move the transducer over this area as images are

recorded in real-time by the computer. Ultrasound procedures typically take 30 to 60 minutes,
depending on the area of the body being studied. Although the sonographer will not be qualified
to give you a diagnosis they often times can answer many of your questions. Once the
necessary images have been recorded, the radiologist will interpret the results and provide a
report to your referring physician, who will then discuss the findings and diagnosis with you.
