There are some things we really don’t want to find out about until we absolutely have to. If someone tells you there’s a bear in the backyard, you’re going to want to take a peek. Did you hear a strange noise coming from the attic? You probably want to know what’s making it. If you think there’s a monster under the bed you’re not going to sleep peacefully until you shine a flashlight underneath it.  We have a natural instinct to investigate the things we can’t see or explain.  So why do we often feel differently about what’s happening inside our own bodies?

SHINE A LIGHT

Is it because we’re afraid of what we might find? Few of us really want to know how much body fat we actually have, true? It is Important. Here’s something to consider. Knowing doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, knowing can be reassuring and empowering. The screening, blood work, imaging or a conversation with your health care provider might uncover something that needs attention, or it might simply confirm that everything looks good. Either way, you get information and information gives you choices. As for me, I’d much rather have a flashlight than sit in the dark imagining what might be under the bed.

KNOWLEGE IS POWER

Preventive care isn’t about expecting something to be wrong. You wouldn’t let your car’s engine seize before checking the oil. Regular maintenance helps prevent small problems from becoming expensive, dangerous ones. Your health deserves the same kind of attention. Some health issues are quiet in the beginning, which means you can’t always rely on how you feel to tell you what’s happening. That is why regular checkups and appropriate screenings can be so valuable. Sometimes taking care of yourself means doing something you never thought you’d do. Maybe it’s an injectable. Maybe it’s swallowing a horse pill or two. Maybe it’s making a few changes to your diet and getting more exercise or simply keeping an eye on a number that’s a little higher than you’d like. None of that has to be frightening. It’s just information followed by a decision. There is something pretty comforting about that.

CALL TO ACTION

So go ahead. Turn on the flashlight. Look under the bed. Check the attic. Make sure there isn’t a bear hanging out in the backyard. When it comes to your health, don’t be afraid to find out what’s going on inside your body. Schedule the screening. Ask the question. Check the numbers. Know what’s happening. You may discover something needs attention or may simply walk away with peace of mind. Either way you’re better off knowing and that’s pretty positive place to start.
