Today’s blog is one of those that has little to do with ultrasound or healthcare.  Every now and again I allow myself to venture off track for the sake of a good old fashioned motivational inspirational blog that is good for the mind, spirit, soul and in turn the body.  The following are bits taken from the great Denzel Washington.

FALL FORWARD

Denzel once gave a commencement speech that discussed a topic where he included the idea of falling forward not back.  He says “Why would I want to go backward?  Instead, I intend to move forward.  If I fall, it’ll be in the right direction.  Fall big.  Fall hard.  If you fail, at least you are going to see what you hit.”

WHAT’S YOUR GIFT?

Mr. Washington asks, “What is your gift and what are you going to do with what you have?”  He said to look at some of the most famous faces from history and they’ll tell you the same thing.  Talent without working hard is nothing.

  • Michael Jordan said, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”
  • Maya Angelou said “Talent is like electricity. We don’t understand electricity. We use it.”
  • Wolfgang von Goethe said, “The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness using it.”
  • Nelson Mandela said, “There is no passion to be found playing small and in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

Falling back is settling.  Falling forward is a risk.  It takes a lot to dust yourself off and go again.

I’VE GOT NOTHING

I’ve chatted with many souls who don’t feel like they have a specific talent or much to contribute.  Denzel’s speech included a few examples of some famous failures that turned out to be wins.

  • Reggie Jackson struck out 2,600 times in his career, the most in the history of baseball, but you don’t hear about the strikeouts. People remember the home runs.  Fall forward.
  • Thomas Edison conducted one thousand failed experiments because the on thousand and first was the lightbulb. Fall forward.

Aspire to make a difference.  The idea is that to succeed, you must first fail.

JUST DO IT

Mrs. Washington is quoted as saying, “To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.”  Afterall, we regret the things we don’t do, instead of the ones we do.”
