Hello! May I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy and healthy fourth of July, AKA Independence Day. I hope you are taking some time this holiday to reflect upon and appreciate your place in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
CELEBRATE
Many of us will spend the holiday lounging around the pool, enjoying ice cream cones, grilling burgers, hot dogs and shooting off fireworks. It sounds like fun but please be cognizant that not everyone loves fireworks. Let’s take a somber moment to remember that many suffer from PTSD.
TRIGGERS
Although we can’t escape fireworks, be aware of potential triggers for veterans and understand how loud noises and bright flashes can evoke traumatic memories.
FIDO
On another note, many animals are terrified of the loud booms and bright lights that Fourth of July celebrations bring. Our two mutts fall into this category and need medication and attention to help calm them. Please have fun while being respectful.
FREE IS COSTLY
What does the other kind of free mean? It means getting something for nothing. Who doesn’t love a good freebie? You can always grab someone’s attention at the thought of buy one, get one free. Alternatively some people shop for things that are free of ingredients they don’t want. We see products advertised as free from pesticides, sugar, fat, artificial colorings, flavorings, carcinogens and other evils. Have you ever noticed that these things that are free from something are considerably more expensive? True story. The truth of the matter is that free actually costs.
FREE LUNCH
Drs. James Gwartney, Richard Stroup and Dwight Lee write in Common Sense Economics, “Because we cannot have as much of everything as we would like, we are forced to choose among alternatives. Doing one thing makes us sacrifice the opportunity to do something else we value. There is no such thing as free lunch. This is why economists refer to “at all costs” as “opportunity costs.” Remember…
- Our most scarce resource is our time.
- No matter how much income or wealth you possess, you still only have twenty-four hours per day.
- None of us know how many days we have on this earth.
All choices involve cost. Nothing is free and nothing is without sacrifice.
FREE TO CHOOSE
When it involves your health, choose your healthcare freely and wisely. Politics and insurance can dictate our choices however, we do still have choices. When it comes to diagnostic ultrasound, feel free to contact us, ask questions, inquire about us, look at our Google reviews or drop by for a visit. We feel confident you will choose High Desert Doppler. Feel free to call us at 505-350-3397. Happy Independence Day. God bless the USA!

Hello! This week’s blog revisits something I’ve written about previously. Like many other things, I jump on the bandwagon and I’m gung ho…until I’m not. I loose enthusiasm or forget about benefits I’ve once touted. What are we talking about? Something that could benefit your body and overall health.
ADD NOT SUBTRACT
Rather than berating myself for a few extra pounds or failures, I choose to add rather than subtract. That doesn’t mean I want to add a few more pounds. It means I want to add healthier choices. Rather than to quit doing things, I want to start adding, doing and learning new things, for instance…
COLLAGEN
Once the contents of the collagen canister ran out, I forgot about the seemingly effective supplement. Yes, we have all heard about it, but do we really understand? I did a bit of research and now I’m on the collagen bandwagon once again. Give me a few paragraphs to explain.
WHAT IS IT?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. Healthline.com gave me the information that I share with you. It explains that collagen is the main component of connective tissue that make up several body parts including tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles. It provides your skin with structure and helps strengthen your bones.
AGE
We are not getting any younger yet there is no reason we have to feel our age. Supplements are an important part of our daily intake. Some believe collagen should be added to that list since collagen production begins to decline as the years increase.
BENEFITS
Collagen supplementation can provide a variety of benefits including…
- Skin health. It strengthens skin and plays a role in elasticity and hydration reducing wrinkles and dryness.
- Joint pain. It helps maintain your cartilage which is the rubber-like tissue that protects your joints.
- Bone loss. Your bones are made mostly of collagen, which gives them structure and strength. Our body deteriorates with age. So does bone mass. Collagen may inhibit bone breakdown that leads to osteoporosis.
- Muscle mass. Studies show that collagen supplements help boost muscle mass in those with sarcopenia which is the loss of muscle mass that happens with age.
- Heart health. Collagen provides structure to your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. Without collagen, arteries can become less flexible possibly leading to atherosclerosis, which is a disease characterized by the narrowing of the arteries. This could lead to heart attack or stroke.
- Hair and nails. It may increase the strength and help them grow longer and stronger.
- Gut health. Although there is no concrete evidence, some experts say it could help leaky gut syndrome.
CONS
Some sources say don’t waste your money. Others say adding collagen supplements promote health and well-being in addition to a well-balanced diet. Do your research, check with your healthcare provider then decide if this is something you’d like to incorporate.

Maybe you noticed, maybe you didn’t. I took a brief hiatus from writing the HDD blog to enjoy some vacay time. I’m back with new ideas and ready to share. This week’s blog touches on the idea of infectious. What is the first thing you think of when you hear that word? Eooowwww. Not to fast. Read on to consider a different perspective.
DEFINE PLEASE
Merriam-Webster defines infectious.
1 a. producing or capable of producing infection
- transmitting or capable of transmitting infection
- caused by or resulting from an infection with one or more
pathogenic agents
- spreading or capable of spreading rapidly to others
YOUR BODY IS AMAZING
I am certainly no runner however, I do enjoy all the benefits a brisk walk provides. Occasionally I take a 3.5 mile walk around the path of the Albuquerque Academy along with other runners and walkers. Everyone shares a common goal of getting a little sunshine, fresh air and exercise. I love the feel of my heart as it works to pump gallons of blood. As I breathe a little harder, I burn some fat and tax my lungs to do what they do best. I challenge my bones, skin and muscles. It does all this automatically with little more than intention and effort. The human body is amazing!
A SIMPLE ACT
Most people you encounter along the path give you the perfunctory half grin or a wave when you pass. Some simply ignore you. I was on the home stretch of my walk when I passed a woman and her two dogs. She looked right at me, cracked an ear to ear grin and said “Good morning! It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it? She was lovely and her sunshiny disposition was infectious. I returned a huge smile. Her simple act impacted me and I decided to spread the infection.
POLARITY
Recently, I experienced the polar opposite of this woman’s kindness. I witnessed assumption, gossip, rumor and innuendo. This act spread infection almost as quickly as the kindness did. I watched the contagion destroy trust and friendships. We all have a choice. Always choose kindness. We are human. We all fail. If at first you don’t succeed, try again.
IT’S A CHOICE
“Choosing to be kind is a choice to make the power of intention active in your life. The beneficial effect of kindness on the immune system and the increased production of serotonin have been proven. Conversely, unkindness weakens the body and puts us into a state if dissonance. Extend acts of kindness. Ask for nothing in return.
Dr. Wayne Dyer
BEGINNING TODAY
“Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.”
Og Mandino
CONTAGION
If something contagious had been spread to you, hopefully it is kindness, happiness and health. Feel free to infect others. If HDD can help with the aforementioned, call us at 350-3397.

Hello! I hope you find today’s blog as interesting to read as I found to write. The inspiration comes from a podcast I heard this morning. I’ve listened to this podcaster in the past but lost track of him. He is a speaker and a life coach. I’m happy to say, I’m glad he is back!
NO EXCEPTION
I have heard Rob Dial’s podcasts (The Mindset Mentor) that I find inspirational, motivational and educational. Today is no exception. I always listen to something while I work out. Rather than hearing the same tired music, today I listened to him. Glad I did.
WHEN THE STUDENT IS READY THE TEACHER APPEARS
We’ve heard this phrase before and it is true. Coincidentally when we look for a solution, it somehow shows up. Today I was looking for resolutions to a few challenges. I was looking for a motivational podcast, when this one serendipitously appeared.
YOUR BODY
In today’s episode, Rob points out how we do things for our body because we hate a particular part. Do you do crunches because you hate your tummy, squats and lunges because you hate your legs and torture your triceps because you hate the flab? His question is, why do we move our body out of hate? We should move our body out of love. What a concept.
BOXES
We can all admit to torturing our bodies. We’ve occasionally had a little too much to drink, gotten too much sun, too little sleep, eaten substandard food, ingested poisons, gotten dehydrated, stayed out too late, let stress control us and not get necessary medical attention. Although we’ve checked a few of these boxes, miraculously our body continues to wake up, beat our heart, circulate our blood, think and move despite the abuse. It loves us.
LOVE
Don’t move your body because you hate a particular part. Move it and honor it because you love and respect it. Go for a walk or lift weights because it is good for the body that serves you. It is your responsibility. You are in charge of taking care of it. No matter what color, shape, condition or size, honor it. Maybe it’s not “perfect” but it’s yours.
ADJUST YOUR LENS
What kind of energy you are putting into loving yourself? Do you exude negative energy coming from a place of hate? Change that and come from a place of love and gratitude. Your body is designed to move. You would never cage a dog all day every day. It isn’t good for your dog and being sedentary isn’t good for you. Look at your life through a new lens. Even if your circumstance looks grim and you hate everything about it, you might see a bright side and a reason to find gratitude, love and joy. Happiness is not found in getting what you want. It’s found in loving what you have.

This week’s blog was born from the brainchild of another. I can’t take credit for this thought. A phrase from a guest on Good Morning America stopped me in my tracks. I don’t know what subject matter the phrase pertained to but I thought it was interesting and worthy of the HDD blog.
WAIT FOR IT…
The phrase that grabbed my attention was this. “Bless your life with boundaries.” When you hear the word boundary, you might think about shapes, delineation, properties or relationships. Boundaries should be where one thing ends and another begins.
BOUNDARY
Noun
-A line that marks the limit of an area; a dividing line.
-A limit of a subject or sphere of activity.
An article from uhs.berkeley.edu defines three different kinds of boundaries that I will synopsize below.
ONE
Someone with rigid boundaries might keep others at a distance to avoid the possibility of rejection. They may seem detached, have few close relationships, are very protective of personal information and are unlikely to ask for help. They avoid intimacy and close relationships and have fewer close relationships.
TWO
Those with porous boundaries tend to overshare information, have difficulty saying no, get overinvolved with other’s problems and are dependent on the opinion of others. They are accepting of abuse or disrespect and fear rejection if they don’t comply with others.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
Those with healthy boundaries tend to value their own opinion. They don’t compromise values for others. They share personal information in an appropriate way which means they do not over or under share. They know personal needs and wants and can articulate them effectively. They are accepting when others say “no” to them.
EXAMPLES
Verywellhealth.com give us some examples of boundaries which include…
- This involves your body and personal space.
- These boundaries are crossed when pressured into unwanted intimate affection, touch or sexual activity.
- Intellectual/mental. This compromises your personal ideas, beliefs and thoughts.
- These are compromised when feelings or personal information you have disclosed are belittled, minimized or shared without your permission.
- Material/financial. These boundaries are crossed then you are pressured to lend, spend, give or loan money when you don’t want to.
- Crossing these boundaries happens when you have unreasonable demands or requests of your time or you over commit.
BUT HOW?
Now we have a few examples of boundaries. The question is how do I set healthy boundaries? Start by asking yourself if you need to set boundaries and why. For many, it can be uncomfortable, difficult and for some, impossible. Take baby steps and focus on one at a time. Be clear about what you want and expect. Prepare yourself for what you want to say. Rehearse if necessary. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Lastly, keep it simple and concise.

This week’s blog is a recycle from a few years ago. I am confident it will be worth your time to re-read it. Your time is precious. More often than not we have to work at making time for things we feel are worthy. We work at work, we work at home, we work at school, we work at relationships, we work at health, and we work at happiness. Life is work. It is all worth it? Yes. You are worth it.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
Every day we pay for services that someone else provides. Who doesn’t love a bargain? That being said, many look for someone who can “do it cheaper” or “give you a deal.” News flash my friends. Cheaper isn’t always better and getting a deal is normally at someone else’s expense. Some will ask for discount prices. Others will pay full price to support your time, your expertise, your experience and your work. Most businesses don’t win on being cheap. They win on being valuable.
A FEW QUOTES
“Don’t lowball yourself. If you’ve done the work and put in the miles and service with excellence, you’re worth more than you probably believe.”
-Brendon Burchard
“You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.”
-Zig Ziglar
“Don’t lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality.”
-Ralph Marston
“With realization of one’s own potential and self confidence in one’s ability, one can build a better world.”
-Dalai Lama
BE CONFIDENT
Tinybuddah.com shares a few ideas about how to be more confident.
- Tap into the confidence you were born with.
- Know your strengths and weaknesses.
- Expect success.
- Trust your capabilities.
- Embrace the unknown.
- Take risks.
- Learn to receive praise.
- Practice confidence.
START AND STOP
If you haven’t already, start giving the best you’ve got. If you start giving, you will start receiving. Start loving what you do. Start being open minded. Start behaving confidently. Start accepting. Start validating others. If you haven’t already, stop relying on others for your happiness. Stop relying on them for self-confidence. Stop spreading rumors. Stop protesting. Stop being anti-everything!
LUNCH ANYONE?
We get what we pay for. In this life, there is no free lunch. When you are in service of others, be sure you deliver your work expertly, confidently, timely, honestly and gratefully. Work hard. Be proud of your worth.
